Årabrot: Revenge

30/11/10  ||  Altmer

Described as noise rock, this Norwegian outfit play… music. I can barely call it metal. I don’t really know what the fuck to call this, actually. Yearbread (or whatever the fuck their name means) play what Neurosis would sound like if they had an even shittier production, terrible vocals and… a lot of tom hits on their drum kit. You know how interesting this music must be then. It is basically the rock version of Neurosis, but not as good. And ten times as crazy. Fuck. I feel privileged to be a GD reviewer now.

And when I say terrible vocals I mean terrible vocals. In fact I shit myself laughing when the first track played because it was just too… constipated. That is actually the right word. It is basically high-pitched screaming what he does, with no tone or consistency whatsoever. It really is just RAAAAAAARGH RAAAAARGH RAAAARGH. The music isn’t actually too bad though. Pity the vocals completely kill any potential this shit has. Oh my god that is some seriously awful shit. It is like Dave Mustaine whispering and yelling like Scott Kelly. If you can’t picture how awful that is, I recommend you let it stay that way. Let it STAY THAT WAY.

Bonus good bass sound, though – it dominates the proceedings. The bass is more prominent than on Joy Division records and that can only mean good things. The guitar tone has an awful lo-fi sound and lacks punch. Even by post-metal standards, the sound of Cult of Luna, Isis, Neurosis etc is much better in comparison. Actually all of the music is pretty good – music-wise, this stuff is pretty engaging. Joy Division meets Mastodon. I dig that a lot and it appeals to the more exotic music lover in me. They could actually keep playing the music for a long time with me.

But whatever the fuck they do in the future, for the love of Satan, fire the singer. He is the one reason this band manage to suck absolute donkey dick.

Recommendation: I think it’s pretty obvious what I recommend.
