Witchery: Witchkrieg
16/07/10 || Lord K Philipson
It’s easy to understand that a band that is comprised by people like Patrik Jensen (responsible for one of the finest death metal albums ever in Seance’s “Saltrubbed eyes” as well as being shredder in The Haunted), drummer Martin Axe (Opeth), bassist Sharlee D’Angelo (Arch Enemy), second guitarist Rickard Rimfält (Seance) and new vocalist Legion (ex-Marduk) can’t do fucken wrong.
In some 30 minutes they throw excellent riff after excellent riff at us and there’s no way to protect yourself from the onslaught. And why the fuck should we? I gladly take the abuse coz Witchery’s fucken ace.
It’s evident that metal is usually created better when the old dogs do it. These guys are no kittens in the scene; they have played in many a band over the years obviously, which results in a know-how that younger bands can only dream of. “Witchkrieg” (a 1000 bonus points for the album title and another 1000 points for the excellent cover) is shock-full of catchy riffing, excellent drums and a production where everything is audible as well as punchy as fuck.
You wanna know how good “Witchkrieg” is? It’s so good that Kerry King couldn’t refuse to be in this video for the title track. It’s so good that the Exodus axe-men Altus and Holt chipped in some solos. But that’s not enough… Andy LaRoque and Hank Shermann also wanted in with some neat guitarwork. Now that’s cred for ya. And still Witchery only sold some 600 copies in the USA (according to Nielsen Soundscan) the first week of release.
Embarrassing.
I need not write much more, so lemme end with the following: if you claim to like metal and do not like Witchery – you are seriously fucken retarded.
Get this metal-fest NOW.
