Tramp: Indigo

12/05/11  ||  Habakuk

Yes, I’m a sucker for the Hellacopters, hence my volunteering for reviewing an album featuring their former drummer Robert Eriksson in expectance of more snotty, kick-ass, guitar-heavy rock. He, alongside a few other dudes that have played in bands apparently big enough to be namedropped in descriptions, formed a new band, called the whole thing Tramp and put out their debut on Killer Cobra Records who appear to be administering the ‘copters heritage with assorted acts.

Unfortunately, this attempt is much to tame. Although the guitars sound adequately potent, the production in general is a bit too warm and soft, and shines light on my major gripe with the album. That singer. I had no idea that someone that reminds distantly of Jello Biafra could sound that conformist. Way too slick, way too polished, way too girlish, Tramp as a whole come across as the aural equivalent of Polka Dots instead of bringing balls-out Garage Rock forward the way we loved it about the Hellacopters.

Not that there is no potential, but the lack of speed and grit just leaves me desperately clinging to the odd cool riff in hope for some energy. Unfortunately in vain, as these few riffs are the only thing making this worthwhile. Throw this on on your next Indie party for the canvas bag carrying uni crowd, but to anybody looking at this whole “Rock and Roll” affair from a metal angle, I’m afraid Tramp won’t do the trick.
