Thyrfing: Farsotstider
10/02/06 ||

A whole bunch of years ago, I got some new members for my band Paganizer. One was the drummer from a band called Portal. I made friends with the other guys from that band as well, and they both listened to Thyrfing and played somewhat similar music. I didn´t really care for that stuff, but after a while the company of friends and beer always does the same trick; you gradually start to warm up to anything at all, really. Maybe not assrape, but pretty much anything else.
Through these guys I discovered that Amon Amarth were more than just a one album wonder, as I had thought, and I also got fairly interested in Thyrfing even if I never understood their interest in the overly retarded album “Valdr Galga”. Anyway, the “Urkraft” album really was quite amusing and I liked it a lot, but then the interest kinda faded a bit too fast for me to be able to keep track of the band. As I understand it, they did some album called “Vansinnesvisor”, but I never checked it out properly as my liking for Viking jazz had faded, as I mentioned. Now I´m checking out their latest effort, “Farsotstider” (Swedish for “assraping times”), and I must admit that they have really managed to carry their concept forth quite a bit, while still remaining true to their roots, which would be folk music inspired metal and the art of moving a lawn with only two blunt forks as tools.
Getting a bit empty here on what to write really, which might be because I´m actually listening to the album right now, and it doesn´t do much for me, really. I guess what I want to say is that if you like Thyrfing you should drop them an email and ask them to stop fucking around in my apartment. I mean, I liked them years ago, but these days I can´t really relate to all that cheerful chanting about plague, mead and hardship they pound into every fucken song.
6 heaps of defecated Viking innards out of 10
