SuperHeavyGoatAss: Nemesis

19/01/14  ||  Habakuk

Ever heard of these guys? Well, you’d certainly remember it, with a grand name like that. Me, I certainly don’t remember any prior contact with any kind of goat ass. What I do remember however, is prior contact with Stoner Rock, and the band in question obviously have had that, too. I’d go as far as saying that it is was actually their one and only influence. Their material is that straightforward.

You might consider this boring, unimaginative or whatever, but the good news is that they have listened to enough Stoner to know exactly what they’re doing. The thick fuzz, the tempo variations and slight mood changes, the voice, the catchiness, the groove, – all of it is up there with the best of ‘em. Plus, the 4 guys that used to make up SuperHeavyGoatAss were a skilled, tight bunch with no weak spots in their delivery. I can’t even find much to criticize about the production, except that the overall level could be a tad higher. Whatever, really.

Somewhere between The Sword, Fu Manchu and Danzig – SuperHeavyGoatAss pack the message (“We play Stoner”) into eleven rather short, effective pieces. And don’t we all love a bit of e-string plucking to 4/4 beats, with Orange Amps (presumably, I can’t hear that shit) smoking? Sure we do. And since the singer’s performance always fits the music like the proverbial glove, though there is some variation in his approach, even the biggest make-or-break criterion is met.

I can’t do anything but wholeheartedly recommend this album to anyone into the genre. Just can’t find anything that’s not to like!
