Seneca: ReflectionsSeneca: Reflections

Seneca was a Roman writer and orator, wrote about the history of the Roman Empire and stuff. It’s also, apparently an American (no, really?) deathcore band. And, oh, yes, it is insanely boring. To the point of making me wish for death several times during the first track alone (no, I don’t mean the intro. I’m not that mean). Now that is fucking depressing. The clichés are just all over the place. There’s your chugga-chugga guitar riffs, the angsty growls that sound just like everyone else’s, there are emo clean vocals and even a little piano here and there.

It’s funny how the American scene went from turning it’s back completely on metal, then came new metal and a shitload of kids jumped on the bandwagon; then, as that scene died out as fast as it came, everyone went on to the metalcore scene, and there is no fucking denying that these kids were the ones listening to Korn, Limp Bizkit and Deftones. I’m fucking certain of it. And hey, I’m not here to judge, not at all. Everyone fucks up when they’re young. You like stupid things, so what? I liked Nirvana and Guns N’Roses, big deal, I grew out of it. And no big deal to those that still do like those 2 bands. To each his own, right? What bothers me in this whole debacle is how entire scenes are built upon a trend, bringing up bands completely devoid of a soul, of any kind of content. It’s just a repetition of the same ideas, over, and over, and over again. Where does it end?

The metalcore, just as new metal, is quickly imploding. It’s only natural. There is only so much emulation that people are willing to buy. Every trend eventually gets tiring, people move on to something else. Remember The Strokes, The Hives, The Whatevers? Yeah, me neither. Metal isn’t any different. It’s just a shame, though, because good bands did come out of this pack. But freeloaders have to fuck it up. But that’s humanity for ya. Why try and be creative and original when you can just rip someone off?

Yes, I’m entirely aware I hardly spoke of Seneca on this review. Instead, I chose to emulate Seneca, the orator; to speak of our times and of things about to crumble. Because there isn’t really anything to say about Seneca the band. You’ve heard it a thousand times before.

The cover: No idea what is going on here.

2 types of songs constantly being recycled out of 10.
