Sahg: III
28/12/10 || revenant
Good evening fight fans and welcome to what promises to be an intriguing main event. Tonight we will see grizzled veteran Revenant taking on a relative newcomer and rather unknown quantity in Sahg. Sahg hails from Norway, who haven’t really produced a lot of quality of late. This contest will take place over ten rounds.
Seconds down, round one…
Round 1 (aka In Through the Eye)
A quiet start here with an acoustic intro. Sahg aren’t really showing us what they are made of, and Revenant is happy to sit back for the time being.
Round 2 (aka Baptism of Fire)
Sahg enter the second round with purpose with a great opening riff. Revenant notices the distinct 70’s rock worship, a wry grin passes his face and he prepares to move in for the kill. But wait! Sahg throws together a combination, great riffs, great singing, killer songwriting and a monster chorus. Revenant looks stunned. This round really is a baptism of fire, and Revenant has been given a lesson. It may be 70’s rock worship but damn, it’s done well.
Round 3 (aka Mortify)
A weak intro gives Revenant a little confidence back, but then the main riff kicks in. Sahg is all over Revenant and another massive chorus and Revenant is in awe of his opponent. The singer is sounding a lot like Ozzy in this round, which really tops off the song as a great Sabbath tribute.
Round 4 (aka Hollow Mountain)
Sahg opens round 4 with yet another amazing epic riff. Revenant seems to have forgotten the contest at hand and starts playing air guitar mid ring. Is he already so delirious from the pounding Sahg is handing out? Another amazing effort from Sahg, these guys are getting better with each round it seems.
Round 5 (aka Mother’s Revenge)
In yet another unorthodox move, Revenant has thrown away his water bottle and asked for a bong between rounds. Oh dear. Sahg slow it down a little in round 5, with a song sounding much like an 80’s solo Ozzy song, though slower and doomier in approach. Big crunching riffs have Revenant really feeling it, but despite it all he looks happy.
Round 6 (aka Downward Spiral)
Sahg ups the pace again, though this time with not as much impact as the earlier rounds. A great chorus and breakdown are enough to give Sahg the points for this round. Sahg looks to be cruising to a win.
Round 7 (aka Shadow Monument)
Wow. Sahg looks to be ten times bigger in the ring this round with this monstrous doom epic. This song is massive, as big as they come. Revenant is coping a real beating today, and loving it.
Round 8 (aka Burden)
A quieter round here. It’s another typical 70’s rock worship track from Sahg, but this time they are just going through the motions rather than inspiration. Revenant could have jumped all over them in this round, but holds back due to the six brilliant rounds that preceded this one.
Round 9 (aka Denier)
Sahg raises the bar back into place (or should I say the are back on song?) for round 9. Another excellent performance from Sahg, they have really put together a lot of quality rounds and have a big win coming up with “III”.
Round 10 (aka Spiritual Void)
A somewhat psychodelic and weak closer from Sahg. A bit of a disappointment they could not close proceedings more definitively.
Well, what a performance we saw tonight. I have to admit I haven’t heard anything of Sahg before tonight, but what I witnessed may well be the best performance this year. Their doom infused 70’s rock worship sounds fresh, and certainly won over Revenant. Hopefully this will propel Sahg to higher recognition, because this was an extraordinary performance.
The judges cards have just come in, and it’s a big win to Sahg with a…
