Overkill: Ironbound

08/01/10  ||  Euthanatos

Blown away. That’s how I would define my first venture into 2010 metal territory. Overkill simply took my ass, spanked it, splurged on it, kissed it, and handed it back to me. How did this happen? I know not.

Not that Overkill is a crap band. I actually have always had a huge amount of respect for them. They are the very definition of metal in my book. Alas, their albums have been somewhat average lately. Lately, as in the last decade, as “Bloodletting” was interesting, but “Necroshine” was their truly last badass album.

Now cometh “Ironbound”, and this fucker is metal through and through. This album shows a thrash vein I hadn’t seen in Overkill since… well, forever. This is fucking “Horrorscope” material right here. It’s aggressive to a fault, vicious, malign, and everyone in the band sounds fucking tight.

Bobby’s signature snarl is unmistakable and better than ever. Hooray for singers that only get better with age. This guy is pure, unadulterated adrenaline. I’m pretty sure he’s going to die on stage, after all, he’s already had a stroke while performing. How many guys can claim that?

10 songs, and there is not one minute’s rest on this baby. No, sir. Almost an hour of pounding on your rear, 12 inch style. No cream. No lotion. All blood and shit. And it’ll make you smile, I swear it. This is one ass ramming you won’t forget.

10 songs, and not one filler. Every single track on this fucker is awesome and will have you banging your head furiously. The band does not let up one single moment, the guitars are brilliantly heavy, but not down-tuned to nothingness, the bass sound is so crunchy is makes me want to bite it and the drums are so fucking thrash metal, it’s ridiculous.

The only thing I can complain is, where the fuck was this collection of killer riffs for all these years? Shit, no matter, keep ‘em coming, because I love it!

Already a frontrunner for the best albums of 2010, so that’s saying something. “Ironbound” is everything I wanted from an Overkill album. It’s everything I want from a metal album, period.

Bravo, sirs. I stand and applaud you. With my cock, balls and all. Yes, siree.

The cover: Darkened death will embrace us all. Onwards, march.
