Nominon: Monumentomb

07/10/10  ||  Daemonomania

Nominon-son, I am disappoint. Your last album, Terra necrosis, was a delightfully dirty chunk of revivalist Swedeath spiced with thrashy riffs and fun lyrics. “MonuMentos” sounds like the work of band that listened to Bloodbath’s “Nightmares…”, decided to emulate it, but fell short in the awesome department. Upshot – da ‘non serve up a pleasant but forgettable meal.

For serious. For real. The first track “Mantra reverse” is a poor man’s “Cancer of the soul” right down to the blasts, opening scream, and slow section towards the end. When the next tune starts right up with a prototype Unleashed riff, the listener begins to get irritated. When two or three of the disc’s remaining seven songs speed right by with barely a memorable bit between ‘em, we’re in real trouble. If it weren’t for the groovy “Archfiend” (Unleashed robbery aside), ripper “Undead beast”, and a “Mountain of hate” later on…the word fail might come to mind.

Let’s say “Momentwomb” is a murder mystery ala the game Clue. Potentially Quality-infused Album, Esq., has been killed. A handful of shady characters were inside his mansion at the time of death. Here are your suspects:

General Guitarwork: Despite a few absolute monsters like the MAesque churner in “Kevorkian exit” and a pummeler a bit into “Worship”, the General seems content to offer a lack of ribtickling riffery. The hit songs I already mentioned are exempt from this reckoning. Gen. Guitarwork lists the below-mentioned Sultan as one of his best buddies and “partner in crime”.

Lord Lyrics and his footman Baron Booklet: A hatemountain-dwelling member of the blasphemus boringus species, it has been debated whether L.L. is even human. Ze Baron is packed full of these generic lyrics and printed in gold type on a white and black background that is damn near impossible to read. The “thanks” section, in about 3-point type, is completely illegible.

Veronica Vocals: She has at least three male friends while also dating Mr. Album. All of them sound pretty much the same, not that that’s a bad thing.

Sultan Songwriting: The murderous Sultan was found with a bloody knife in one hand and a bloodier candlestick in the other. A revolver was tucked into his pants and a hangman’s noose was spilling out of his back pocket. Inside his left shoe – a lead pipe. His right shoe – a wrench. He is currently undergoing psychiatric evaluation, and mutters “I did it” over and over.

Lt. Dan Drummer III: The only person who can’t be blamed for blandness is Lieutenant Dan (ha!), who’s got the airtight alibi of technique and creativity to spare.

Who could the villain be? Good luck, ye GD defective detectives!

So yeah, I’m bummed. Bummer dude. Sounds like Nominon is going through the motions throughout. Gone is the sinister pleasure one could feel oozing out of tracks like “Black chapel” and “Bane appetite”. These guys need to drop the Bloodbathisms and find the malicious spark that made their past releases so enjoyable. Only then shall they be showered with my daemon semen once more.
