Noctem: Divinity

16/11/10  ||  InquisitorGeneralis

The following statement, dutifully prepared by the members of Noctem in one of their parents basements, came along with this when it made its way to Global D headquarters…

Noctem consolidated as an extreme metal band in April, 2001. Its founders embraced by the ideals of violence’s exaltation, pure hate, misanthropy and the antithesis of all human’s absurd religions created this excellent war-machine which moves forward with giant steps between the ranks of a putrid civilization, infected with poor social values; this values lying in submissive human minds confused by an endless gleam of incoherent principles, which leads them to their total autodestruction.

Oh uh Spaghetti-O, I have bad feelings about this label-sent slab of self-described extreme metal. The following image also does not help set a hopeful scene for “Divinity”.

Noctem
Photoshop plus corpsepaint usually results in something ridiculous…

Ok, so they look like typical Black Metal bozos and it seems like they are on a mission to cleanse the world of religion, civilization, shirts, and normal facial expressions. However, these silly Spaniards are supposed to be a mix of black, thrash, and death metal. This is a combo that has scored some brownie points with me before. This time, it all just a bit much. Noctem is trying wwwaaayyyyy too hard. It is obvious the band has talent but the songs on “Divinity” are too haphazard and spastic. I love variety and technicality just as much as the next guy (except for fellow staffer The Duff, who beats off nightly to “Breeding the Spawn” and has Vogg’s face tattooed on his dick) but craziness for the sake of crazy just does not work. Add this on to the ridiculous look and themes and “Divinity” slides into the aeternal void ov insignificance… also known as the shelf where I keep cds that I don’t listen to anymore.

Please fellas, if you are reading this do not sacrifice a bunny to Satan in order to curse me. Write a silly email in broken English that we here can make fun off. Oops, that is what Italians do. Here are my recommendations…

1) Lose the corpsepaint and the stupid outfits: Seriously, you guys look like the Kiss Army’s drag queens. Drop the Halloween costumes, keep the aggression and anger. Serve you well they will.

2) Streamline the tunes: Your shit is all over the place. Work out better, more simplified song structures. Necrophagist you are not. Obviously, you fucks can play and have considerable talent, especially Darko the drummer. Focus pondskipper, you must focus.

3) Drop the stupid pen names: Beleth, Exo, Darko, UI?????? Are you serious? Only no-name, obscure webzine writers (wink wink) should not use their real names. Trust me, these names only make you sound more ridiculous, not cvlt and necro.

But wait! All of these things could easily be said about Behemoth right?

Wrong cockknocker! Unlike Noctem, Behemoth rules in spite of having pseudonyms, wearing silly evil outfits, and playing supercharged whacked-out blackened death metal. See, Adam and the boys understand that even the most extreme Satanists need to focus on songwriting and flow. There are some decent songs on “Divinity” and a few moments where the band shows major potential. Next time, and there should be a next time because Noctem is not total shit, the band should settle down a bit and go for a heavier, more straight-forward approach. And, like I said, lose the fucken outfits. Last time I checked, the Twilight convention just left town.
