Necromorten: Warfuse

17/01/11  ||  Habakuk

Necromorten are from Brazil. They play high speed thrash. A former staffer is on vocals. This review is biased.

So yeah, I’ve heard a few thrash albums by now, and this one seems to be among the faster third, with our good ol’ Euthanatos’ vocals being a good example of Sadus worship. Or have you heard Desaster, maybe?

For an independent release, the production is mighty fine, and if I didn’t know, I wouldn’t find out this didn’t have “industry backing”, as you call it. Actually it’s good that this isn’t as overproduced as Evile, Bonded By Blood and whatever they’re called, these new old-sounding bands. So, the standard expectations for any straightforward thrash album are sufficiently met. At song number two, however, I begin to wonder: Will every song feature a machinegun intro/outro? And actually, number five is the first song without one. Thanks guys, what started as a nice little joke was starting to get old a bit.

Read the song titles and you’ll pretty much know what to expect from here. “Thrash metal”? Now that’s what I called thinking outside of the box! This is solid, fast, old schoolish thrash, executed by guys who know what they’re doing. I believe they are aware of the fact that they’re not going to receive a price for innovation anytime soon. The foot’s on the pedal, there’s some decent shredding and the riffs are pretty good (though I miss absolutely stellar parts), the half-time breaks at the correct points in time, and they have a few melodic sections as well as bass-focused bits thrown in for good measure. Yeah, that’s pretty much it.

Why I’m not ravingly mad about new-found the saviors of the genre is that, well, you guessed it, all this has been done before. I bet the guys are having a blast and if they’re tight, they probably make for a killer live act, but 12 songs of this caliber come a good 10 years too late to leave a huge impact on me. Apart from that, there’s nothing not enjoyable in this, and if you like, say, Toxic Holocaust, here’s a gang with the same idea but a bit more elaborated songwriting. So, do something good once in a while and check them out. Thrashers can’t go wrong with this.
