Melandrolia: Spleen

07/08/13  ||  Cobal

Progressive rock that wants to be gothic metal is… actually pretty good! These country fellows of mine play a mature form of female fronted rock/metal definitely resembling Marcela Bovio’s previous act, Elfonía, and of course her current band Stream of Passion. Regardless, you can expect every and anything all progressive metal releases should include: virtuosity, great songwriting, jazzy moments and superb vocals. That without the aimless million of notes some tend to go for… Luckily for us all, every instrument’s lines are memorable here, and I’ll tell you this: I caught myself humming the guitar solos right after the first listen. On the other hand, you will miss the metal here. Although this is mainly an instrumental record, the girl’s vocals, as excellently sung as they may be, were a bit sickeningly sweet at some point. But that’s just me. Nice effort, this one.

8.5/10: Sometimes one does a break like this.
