Mausolea: Peasantry
10/01/11 || Daemonomania
So you remember a fantastic article written by a genius motherfucker a while back about all the GD forumer bands? Damn, was that a good piece. Whoever composed it should be sent envelopes of magickal forest mushrooms and cases of dark beer from around the world. Well, from this meisterverk I learned about the music created by the one and only skull. Besides Wrack, he was in a cool (deceased) band to be covered herein – Mausolea. Which means many mausoleums, I guess. A cemetery fit to bust with ‘em.
Mausolea certainly sounded a bit like Wrack, but instead of focusing on the Cult of NeurIsis vibe they tossed in chunks of influence from all over the place. Yet still made the listening experience coherent. Word. As mentioned in that masterful forum band review, hints of violent Coalesce-esque hardcore/metal can be detected, along with what might pass as a “Golden Hall” era Amon Amarth riff in “S.O.S.”. Odd. But Mouse-o-rama blended stuff well and produced seven long, meaty, punishing trackpenises boasting a cubic shitton of individuality. The songs drone, twist, and descend into an almost mathematical madness before releasing you. “King and pawn” best exemplifies this slow build. It starts with smoky clean vocals over a jangling solo guitar, works its way into a high/low growling chorus, then moves into metallic faceslashing mode for the last minute and change. By the way, the growls are devastating indeed.
Solid stuff I say. Real fucken solid. This is not bros on the bro wagon with some Bud Ice and tittays metal, but more introspective jump off the San Francisco bridge and become a statistic metal. Just make sure you’re headbanging all the way down to the water. I urge fans of any above-mentioned band in this review to send the skullster a PM and get yourself a copy of this (or download it free). Give him five bucks for some sweet Wrack while you’re at it. Take my, and that genius author supreme’s, word for it.
