Malummeh: Revival
22/05/09 || Daemonomania
This would be awesome if it were Creedence Clearwater Revival, but it isn’t. No “Fortunate son”, “Bad moon rising”, or “Sinister purpose” awaits the listener here. Some death metal band seriously needs to cover “Green river”, by the way. Chris Barnes and Co. seems to enjoy that type of thing, so get to work Six Feet Under.
CCR aside, it appears that America doesn’t have exclusivity when it comes to vapid metalcore. Yep, you can buy a copy of “Slaughter of the soul” just about anywhere these days, including Finland. ‘Tis a shame that poor At the Gates gets blamed for all of the copycats that have emerged to borrow their riffs. Plenty of the tracks off of SOTS are cool as hell, and it is only natural that others would be motivated to emulate. However, who could have predicted that melodeath would be watered down, exported, watered down further with semi-thrash and clean vocals, and then sent BACK overseas as a ghost of its former self?
Given all that, I don’t really have to describe how Malummeh sounds, do I? ATG riffs, unchained melody all over the place, nonexistent bass (the bassist seems to be out of the band, even), competent but unflashy drumming, mid-range uninspired D. Randall Blythe vocals. All done in such a mechanical way that you could set your watch by it. Multi-tracked vocals in the chorus, repeated 4 times? Must be 3:15 PM.
Yeah, it says meh right in the band name. Someone just getting into metal might find this exciting, but the days when color-by-numbers metalcore created any sort of genital revival around these parts are long gone. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go listen to “Bayou country”. Ahhh, much better. The Meh’s, however, get themselves a 2.5 out of 10 bargain bins.
