Lautstürmer: Depopulator

Nice. By randomly claiming a label-sent album by a band with a stupid German moniker I just stumbled over a couple of Swedes, and not just any, but some (ex- and current) Driller Killer members that have formed a new outfit. Put on my shiny d-beat shoes and off we go…
Descending from a renowned hardcore/crust combo and not changing much, these guys don’t fuck around, obviously. So the first and only universal truth that you’ll find in this review is that if you like Driller Killer, there is no way around this. Some of the fastest d-beat drumming I’ve yet heard backs up all-over-the-place crunchy bass playing and nasty, three to four chords punk guitar patterns interrupted by a few crazy-ass solos. Occasionally though (“Coffinshakaaa!”), the guitar bursts out into a Motörhead-on-speed-like rock and roll riff frenzy that’ll knock you off your socks. And thanks to the band being a three-piece, the crisply rumbling bass guitar (high in treble frequencies) constantly gets to shine, which is always nice for bass lovers like yours truly.
The production as a whole actually is quite treble-heavy, which isn’t exactly surprising given the genre background these folks have, however it’s notably more lo-fi than Driller Killer’s more metal-tinged sound, or Disfear’s, for that matter. The band members’ roots in DK are still very clear from the overall sound nevertheless, so I ain’t got no beef with the production job at all. It’s well adjusted and suits the songs, just don’t expect a “Litany”-like sound, knowhamsayin.
Only three songs barely pass the 2:30 mark which gives the album a playing time of 25 minutes, which isn’t exactly stellar, but what do you expect? I, for one prefer a short album without weak spots to overly stretched mediocrity, and if all you have to say fits into a two minute speed fest, fair enough. So, count me in for another round of Swedish quality crust madness, and keep ‘em coming.
