Kotiteollisuus: 7

The latest Kotiteollisuus album has been out for a little while, so I’m a bit late when it comes to reviewing it. I don’t let that bother me too much though. This band kicks so much ass that it’s the least I can do to promote ‘em, even if it’s months after the release. Yeah, like they really could need the promotion… The thing is, the latest three Kotiteollisuus-releases have sold shitloads ( Note by The Lord: Sure, in fucken Uganda. Who is this fucken band?! ) and the band is already a regular performer at every waking summer-festival in Finland. Meaning that they’re, you know, rich and famous. Kind of. Not that I have too much to complain about since I think it’s damn nice to live in a country that digs metal. Yeah, you heard me, Kotiteollisuus is metal. Heavy fucken metal even.
Ever since I heard their 2002-release, “Kuolleen kukan nimi”, I’ve been hooked on this band. That album had a major fucken impact on me, and I ain’t the only one. The formula of Kotiteollisuus is damn effective: Kick-ass music, songs with brilliant lyrics, shitloads of catchy sing-along tunes and massive fucking guitars. And that seems to be all the metal-loving Finns require, otherwise they wouldn’t be selling gold in the first place, you know. Well, the fact that they sing in Finnish does probably help, at least when talking domestic sales ( Note by The Lord: Yes, there is a reason they sold exactly 2 and a half copy in in the rest of the world, all their albums combined that is ).
“7” has loads of good tracks and even few damn good ones, but it definitely pales in comparison to my favourite Kotiteollisuus-album, “Kuolleen kukan nimi”. I’m not sure why, but there’s something on this disc that doesn’t give me as much kicks as I would’ve hoped it to give. It’s heavier and faster than their prior relese, “Helvetistä itään”, but even that album felt fresher than this does. Even if the sound on “7” is pretty damn heavy, it ain’t the heaviest effort from this group. And I think the production is slightly more “muddy” than they have used before, but emphasis on “slightly”, because it still sounds fucken good.
Somehow it sounds like this was more or less a routine-recording for the band and they didn’t even try to create anything “special”. Hence I ain’t trying to come up with anything remarkable with my review either. Seriously, why should I? “7” is just… well, a basic, good album. Plain and simple.
I’m tempted to give this disc a 7, because I’m aware they’re cabable to so much better than this. But on the other hand, this album does… well, you know, rock. And I love the lyrics and the attitude of this band. So sue me, they get better score than I intended to give.
