Ibogaïne: React

06/08/08  ||  theProphet

So, Ibogaïne’s full length debut was lying around here at GD (not literally duh) and nobody seemed to want to touch it. Alas, here I am again with one more mighty fine review filled with constructive criticism and drôle remarks for your entertainment.

The first thing that struck me as I put on “React” was that Ibogaïne, who are French by the way, sounds like Mastodon. However, due to the fact that I am not a fan of said band (the music is way above decent but their vocals sucks to much) I’m really not sure that my reference is accurate. That said, a band that I think sounds like Mastodon, and possibly with better vocals, sounds like something I could dig, fo’ sure.

How are the vocals then?

Well, not the best I’ve heard, but pretty fucking good. Mostly in the form of a raspy scream with some low growls and talked passages thrown in, the vocals on “React” certainly does not do anything that would lower the eventual grade at the finale of this here review. Djil is obviously a talented screamer and he vertainly know how to work the singing into the songs.

How are the songs then?

Competent here as well, ambitious songwriting with interesting riff structures and a good blend between non-gay melody and flesh-shoveling brutality. At times Ibogaïne gives me some serious Dillinger Escape Plan (and THAT’S a band I fucking like) vibes, which is certainly not a bad thing. The production is stellar, crunchy yet it’s easy to distinguish the different instruments from each other, and the fucking bass is something I think even K would approve of.

Anything bad then? Well, personally I don’t think that any album should span over much more than 40 minutes, and this baby clocks in at almost an hour. Apart from that this is a great album, but with a style that I really can’t say I listen to that much, so I don’t think this will be anything that will get regular spins at my place. That said, I will listen to it again in a couple of days, and perhaps I will be given a reason to regret not scoring Ibogaïne’s “React” higher.

7, or perhaps more, World Warriors out of 10.
