Grenouer: Try

18/11/09  ||  Trauma

I was mightily impressed by their most recent album. The band was given word about the review, and here it sparked e-mail conversations between myself and the vocalist, Ind. He and his band by default are already higher on my short list of favorite bands by being such cool people. Sure, they may be Russians, but let us forgive them for that, okay? Plus, they make good fucken music, that transcends a whole lot of shit save being a complete douche-bag.

The album we have here is their previous, released back in 2007 (though my guess is it was recorded much earlier than that). Is it better than “Lifelong Days”? I’m going to say no right off the bat. It’s not bad, no sir, but their latest beats it in terms of the hooks, melody, and overall catchiness (apparently that’s not a word). The album has a great start, though, and that song – “Devil’s eye” – is supremely groovy and something around which you can thrash to in your room. Seriously, just sit there and bang your head to it, maybe thrust it through the drywall when you’re done. Different here are Ind’s vocals being much harsher. You’ll hear the robotic vocals occasionally, but this album definitely sounds angrier. His cleans sound better on this album than “LLD”, though.

The catchy riffs are still here, as well. That also goes for the bass lines. The real issue that could be presented here, and it is a non-issue all at the same time, is that there are only 6 songs you could call metal. They are good, with “Devil’s eye” and “All along the runway” taking the cake as the best ones here. The intro track is pretty useless and I’m glad they forewent using one after this. Then, at the end we have two techno remixes by the artist gipnoz. See, they are pretty good for a techno remix and I do like them, but the actual Grenouer assault feels so much shorter because of these three tracks. I will reiterate that they are NON-ISSUES in the end, but I must make mention of them.

All in all, a good record. Russian postal service must really fucken suck, because it’s been weeks now and I don’t have some albums sent to me. I was hoping to compare this to previous records of theirs, so thanks politico-corrupto. Still, I like this album and you should, too.
