Godhate: Anguish

I wanna thank Dana White, TapouT, Punishment Clothing, Randy Couture, Xenergy Energy Drinks, the very octagon itself, Zuffa and Forrest Griffin for inspiring me to write this essay where 90% of it deals with everything but the actual music on the disc present. With that out of the way, let’s move on.
It’s been way too fucken silent in the Godhate camp since my review of their last recording from 2003 (under the moniker Throneaeon, the album was called “Godhate” though. Confusing, I know). Mainman Tony Freed (still no relation to The Project Hate’s Petter S. Freed, except they both look like girls) called me up for phonesex (I turned him down, he’s not my type of whore) a few weeks ago and wanted my address so he could send their latest shit for coverage here at GD. He had finally gotten some physical copies of this recording, he said. I didn’t even know they had something new coming out, so that was cool and most welcomed. I always dug this band. I have even done some gigs with Grave in a Godhate t-shirt if I remember shit correctly. But let’s not jump any guns here with the words “latest shit” and “new”…
The day after the steaming phone call I get the package and “Anguish” exposes itself in all its ugly glory. I’m a little disappointed though. I thought there was a new full length destined to terrorize, brutalize and sodomize my headquarters, but nope, “Anguish” is but an EP. Bastards. Also, for natural reasons you would expect this EP to be “new”, right? “Anguish” was fucken recorded, with the old members still on board, back in 2005!!! I’ll bitchslap him for making me believe I had a brand new full-length coming. But let’s cut Tony some slack since he’s had his fair share of bullshit de luxe with this band.
You can skip the next paragraph in case you are not very interested in what Godhate’s been up to since the last disc and why there’s been such a delay in things. Here Tony explains what the situation’s been like, exclusively for GD (oh, and their official website, since that’s where I stole this from):
“Godhate is back in business! Some of you might have wondered what was going on in the GODHATE camp during these last one and a half year. And while some of you bastards smiled behind my back I was reforming the band with new members and now we´re booked for some shows during spring 2008.
So, yes, finally the old members decided to leave the ship. Clabbe already had problems with his back and wasn´t able to perform live. Jens was tired, for some years back, of death metal and didn´t enjoy playing it either. Roger had for several years left and got back in the band again and now when the other guys left he said that he didn’t want to look for new members.
At first I decided to keep on with band myself, and for a period I was even determined to let it rest in peace.( At this time I formed a new project called INNERSANE) But I had one guy from Yttermalung, Sweden, who earlier (autumn -06) announced his interest to replace Clabbe. He got in touch again and I told him about the situation but he was still interested in playing together so he joined the new project. Some month´s later a friend called me up and told me he knew a drummer that could fit GODHATE. We tried it out and the vibes felt great.
I was still unsure whether I should continue with GODHATE and now I was only focused on INNERSANE. I told the drummer that he could move in and start to rehearse the songs. As time passed by I saw his progress and by the beginning of fall 2007 we started to rehearse. I also began to write some songs and slowly the band was getting back in business.
A new era for GODHATE is at hand! REVENGE!”
So, what we have here is a new EP that’s not fucken new at all. Recorded with members who left the Godhate bus faster than Gene Simmons’ latest load left his penis. I guess that forces us to concentrate on what’s left; 4 songs recorded in 2005. It better be good. Nah, it better be fucken real good.
And Godhate is not letting me down. They play excellent death metal with riffage comparable to Vader first and foremost. But there’s also hints of Immolation, Morbid Angel, Unleashed, and the list goes on. Catchy, quite brutal music with few drawbacks. I had some criticism about drummer Roger in the last review, and that criticism still stands. Despite a triggered and very lifeless sounding kit, his style is not too impressive. You know the cheating-while-playing-fast dilemma, don’t you? That’s not acceptable in metal. How many times do I need to say this?!
If you can’t play fast, don’t play fast.
That’s from the instructional video Metal drumming 1 on 1, by Lars Ulrich. Nah, sorry, that one was called If you can’t play drums, record “St. Anger”. Yay. Also, the too quantized, fast doublekicks are irritating as fuck. I can’t even begin to fathom what Tony could do with a stable and competent line-up when it comes to this band. Hopefully we’ll not have to wait too fucken long for a new recording. Godhate’s too fucken good to be brought down by half-assed band members. Hang in there Tony, get the right people in the band and continue to release excellent death metal. I’m not going to rate this since it’s an EP, but let’s just say it’s the best recording I have heard from this band so far.
Now give me a fucken new album.
