You know that thing that happens when you don’t know shit about a band except that they own live? You don’t know any of their songs, you’ve seen them once or twice in a magazine or on a website but you’ve never bothered getting into them? Well, I had that with GWAR. With a live act as intense as theirs you don’t really need to own any of their albums, as long as you’ve seen them live. Mere words cannot convey the awesomenss that is GWAR.
Now the LVC in Leiden is where you usually go to see DJ Fuckhead play shitty Dutch techno. Once every 6 years or so, they actually put on a GOOD metal show. This year it was GWAR that was set to desecrate Leiden. The pilgrims who originally stayed in Leiden on their journey to America would be shocked to see what their descendants brought with them when they came back. A Jesus/Hitler hybrid (Jitler), a Jewish Satan (Jewcifer), a police officer (Pig), and even a crippled GWAR fan. The show contained a lot of swearing, shit and penis jokes, and lots of band to crowd communication, especially in the form of blood and piss.
If you get a chance to see GWAR anywhere near where you live, go. And wear a white shirt, that way the blood will show up better than on your standard black metal shirt. I actually bought a shirt so that my Entombed “Left Hand Path” shirt wouldn’t get all fucked up. Oh, and use face scrub to get rid of the fake blood, it’s only food coloring and tap water, but it doesn’t come off with normal soap. Fuckers…
