Fleshwrought: Dementia/Dyslexia

18/10/10  ||  Lord K Philipson

One of these days when I was (s)trolling the Internetz I came across this moniker and saw that they were signed to Metal Blade Records and had an album coming out. There was also a link where you could stream the whole damn thing and at the time of writing this it can be heard here. When this review goes up (2 months from this very moment of writing this) I’m not sure if it’s still available to stream, but if it is – check it out. Just try the link, fucko. At the site where I listened thru this piece it had the following information:

“If you’re a death metal freak then you’re probably already aware of Fleshwrought… but if you’re not, then you should be. The project is helmed by Navene Koperweis who handles all instruments on Dementia/Dyslexia, Fleshwrought’s Metal Blade debut; you might recognize Navene from his drum duties with the late Animosity and with Tosin Abasi’s Animals as Leaders. Navene recruited Job For A Cowboy’s Johnny Davy to handle vocal duties, but the results are unlike any project either man has been involved with before; this is fast, technical, intricate, proggy as fuck death metal that’s musically catchy the way bands like Psycroptic and Gorod are. In short, it rules, but don’t take my word for it; listen to the full album below.”

I did that. I gave this bastard a few spins and ultimately decided on it being good enough to be covered at GD.

I haven’t heard about this Navene fucko before, nor do I know of his work with Animosity. I have heard about some band called Fleshrot, though. Is there a connection? I have no idea. Fuck it. Anyways, obviously this dude is quite talented (mad quantizing skillz in Pro-Tools as well, that’s for sure) in alot of areas. He does everything but vocals on “Dementia/Dyslexia”. That area is taken care of by some Job For A Cowboy dick, as mentioned above. He’s got a decent voice, for sure. There’s some variety in it and his power is fine. Definitely a good choice for vocals.

If you are into death metal that goes beyond the standard formula – you’ll dig this shit. It’s chaotic as fuck but without losing catchiness. It’s experimental as well with tons of weird electronical sounds thrown in here and there, giving everything a bit of an industrial edge (for better or for worse sometimes). On top of this we have tons of solos that Fredrik Thordendal (Meshuggah) would be proud of. The production is super clean as well with a good punch but the drums are occasionally bordering on being irritating. The kicks are way too high and too triggered, for one. Well, the usual problem as with most of today’s death metal productions, you know. It’s not as godawful as the drums on Krisiun’s “Ageless venomous” though, so you will be able to stand it.

Fleshwrought is not as easy a listen as f.e Douchehammed’s Necrophagist. It’s not as catchy nor as melodic, but it could appeal to the same crowd in a sense that it’s über-technical and brutal as fuck. I am quite impressed actually and I think Fleshwrought might get some attention.

Release date was August 3rd by the way, so fetch yer physical copy at your local record dealer’s place. Yeah, like that will happen.
