Evanescence: Fallen

24/04/04  ||  Lord K Philipson

How fun is it to review this band really? Are they even metal enough for this site? Are they even good? Aren’t they just a poor version of Linkin Park with female vocals? Let’s see here;

1. Really fun.
2. Oh yes.
3. Is the pope religious?
4. Perhaps to some.

Evanescence did such an impression on me when I first heard their video-hit “Bring me back to life”. Not becoz it was the best track I ever heard (and I even hated the fucken rapping in the middle of it), no, all becoz of Amy’s voice. What it comes down to is that I have never been as blown away by a female vocalist as I am with Amy Lee. She makes this band stand out from the 1000000 other mainstream/almost-metal combos out there today. Without this chick, oops… I mean “whore”, they would be nothing really. I have never heard a girl sing with so much emotion and conviction. She holds one completely unique voice. While she might not be the best technical singing slut around since the dawn of mankind, she holds so much feeling 99% of the competition loses before even entering the damn contest.

Sure, I can hear some Auto-Tuner being used here and there on this multi platinum-selling piece; then again, bands not using this function today are as rare as the blow-jobs I get from Jenna Jameson on Tuesdays.

Apparently Evanescence are christians. Total fucken bummer for them. As long as they write this kind of material they can be fucken ice-skaters for all I care. Evanescence know (or knew perhaps, seeing songwriter Ben Moody left the band some time ago. Guess they will have to prove themselves on the next full-length) how to write material that sticks like napalm in yer face. There are extremely catchy hooks everywhere; the production is excellent and expensive-sounding, and it’s all wrapped up in a neat blue cover with Amy’s face on. Could it be any better? Yeah, there could be nude pics and a phone number to this goddess of vocals, though we are all fucked there. But I’m guessing her digits go something like; 555-I-LOVE-K

Or not.

After listening to “Fallen” more times than I get to hear “You are awesome Lord, I love you” a day, I stumbled upon loads of early stuff with Evanescence. Demos and whatnot. It’s not that different compared to the album really, which shows they always had the potential of doing catchy shit. Some of their best tracks aren’t even included on “Fallen” so it’s safe to say they do have material to pick from for their next album. I can’t pick out one bad track on “Fallen”. Sure, there are highs and lows, but nothing is even remotely bad. And I blame Amy for it. I could listen to a fucken jumbo-jet for hours if she was singing on top of it. She’s has that good a voice.

One of the best songs on the album is “My Tourniquet”. The reason I’m mentioning this track in particular is that it’s actually not an Evanescence track from the beginning. It was made by Evanescence’s drummers’ (I don’t care about his name, all I care about is Amy Lee) former band Soul Salvation or what-the-fuck-ever they were called. That band actually played pretty heavy metal (not “pretty heavy metal” but some heavier kind of metal) and that song sounds so weird compared to what they have done with it for this album. I suggest you check it out and see for yourself what Amy can do with a song. If she was a chef, I’m sure she could prepare an excellent meal even with a pile of shit in the ingredients.

I think you get my point.

Actually… Evanescence would be another Linkin Park if it wasn’t for the voice of the band. They would be like any other boring American semi-metal band.

You have all heard this band I’m sure. Of course you hate it, it’s not metal enough and you are soooo fucken metal your balls cling when you walk.

You can suck my cock.

I have only given one album a close-to-perfection rating. That was Dark Funeral’s “Diabolis Interium”. Evanescence are close to that. Amy Lee’s voice gets a perfect 10. The material altogether gets an 8. I was never good at math, but this album gets;

8,5 inverted crosses out of 10.

After all, they deserve a good rating; they do love the fucken Lord. And I have a soft spot for such declarations.
