Dödaren: Maen

19/11/12  ||  sincan

So I have been talking about the music renaissance in Gothenburg lately and here is another fine example of that. Dödaren is an ensemble playing music consisting of a wide variation of inspiration sources such as 70’s hard rock, stoner and punk, all mixed into something new with a modern touch. It is all based on a heavy foundation of epic riffs and Swedish lyrics. But don’t get frightened because of the Swedish lyrics if you don’t speak Swedish, the music pretty much speaks for itself and the vocals are “just” one extra chick/goat added to the orgy. Most of the songs are longer than five minutes and will all take you out on some musical trips with unexpected twists and such like in pleasant ways, and what firstly surprised me was how tight (nope, no sexism here) the music was performed by these four lads.

The album opener has a groove and epicness that will most likely make you to dig, with some selected parts of your body, and it works pretty well for destroying your neck to as well. This is true for more or less everything on this record and it is actually hard to be on a bad mood while listening to it. This means that if you want to fuck things up while listening to this album is that you will do it with a smile, it doesn’t mean that you will stay calm.

A fine example which pretty much describes the twists I mentioned earlier comes in the track “Träden (skogens konung)”. Here the intro builds up something pretty fucking solid and when hells is supposed to break loose you get thrown into something completely different. This will fuck you up a bit before you can stand on your feet again and be able to absorb the tunes. And then in the ending parts of the track the song will tie in with the intro again, not with the same riff or melody, but with similar heaviness and mood. That surely is nice.

I guess it’s time for some cuntstrucktive criticism now before I turn into a too nice (read: weak) person. Not all tracks are of the same high quality, but hey, it’s kinda hard and shit to do a perfect album according to rumors. Sometimes I would just want the vocals to turn into being more intense, like screaming and shouting. I know that this is partly done, but I want more of that good stuff since I want my music extreme, cool and all that.

For me this is a quite original piece of music and it will be interesting to see what they will bring up next, because it feels like they’re here to stay. And the band name? I will not even go into that…
