Dusteroid: Tyrannosonor

24/03/10  ||  Altmer

So, what is up with the dumb name? Dusteroid? Is that like, an asteroid made of DUST? God, these guys are pretty lame with choosing their album and band names. It’s pretty good though that they didn’t choose to play shit music, because musically what they are doing may not be anything new (it’s like an old-school 70’s retread), but it sure as shit has the groove for me to dig this.

You see, what we have here is old-school stoner metal, with liberal Black Sabbath influences, a bit of Candlemass, a bit of stoner rock, some Bigelf-esque passages, but overall, it’s pretty neatly executed for a band with such a terrible moniker. I find my head nodding at times (a rarity when it comes to sent albums), I find my fingers wanting to solo some air guitar, and I wanna grab a whiskey and huddle in the corner with these guys, talking about cool stuff while we smoke some weed (except me, because I don’t actually smoke weed). Fucken great, this is exactly what I needed. This is the kind of metal release that may look silly, but doesn’t have you cringing when you actually listen to it, and surprises you out of nowhere with some good shit coming out of the speakers.

Another good point is how groovy and fat those guitars sound. Nice and dirty, raw, just the way I like my guitars. Bonus points for those. The solos are straight out of Tony Iommi’s Black Sabbath Solo Songbook, Vol. 4. Minus points for being unoriginal but bonus points for not sucking at playing. The drums give me an old-school rock and roll vibe, great. Me likey long time. The vocals sound like a better version of Ozzy Osbourne (did I tell you these guys sound like Black Sabbath? No? They sound like Black Sabbath). The bass grooves along with the rest, like a horse in full gallop. Yeah, I don’t even know what that means. On some songs there are some nice Alice in Chains-esque grooves. Good, me likes the nod towards some more modern material as well.

It however remains to be seen how many spins this will be given, because it all ends up sounding the same after a while (the groove is the same on exactly every song), and 53 minutes for an album of this caliber is probably a bit too much, but even for that kind of run time, it isn’t bad at all. It’s circa the kind of thing I can enjoy in the background for a while, dig a bit live, fuck around to. It’s not intense by any means but I’d take this stuff over metalcore or something any day (in fact I’d take this over most metal, metalcore or not, precisely because most metal releases are pretty shit lately anyhow).

I fucken tilt my whiskey to these guys and hope they get a bit more variety in their sound because that would make them even better. As it is, it’s solid shit, but nothing new. But fuck me with a broomstick sideways if that’s not better than I bargained for all of the time.

Also, the cover reminds me of Ziltoid the Omniscient by Devin Townsend somehow. No idea why. Probably the color scheme.
