Disturbed: Indestructible

16/06/08  ||  Lord K Philipson

How many times can you pull of a “whu-ah-ah-ah-ah!!!” scream without sounding like an idiot? None, that’s how many. Is there a point in creating vocal sounds that make you come off as a fucken monkey? And now we have had it for four albums in a row… I won’t deny the fact that I kinda thought Disturbed grooved a tad the first time I heard them. It was catchy easy-listening in between Cannibal Corpse and Vanessa Carlton. That was shitloads of years ago. Since then they have done absolutely nothing to reinvent themselves or come up with any new ideas for their sound, which is quite ok after all, not all changes are for the better (Hello Metallica!). And these guys obviously sell albums by sounding like this, monkey imitations or not, album after album. Good for them. But in Disturbed’s case I think some new blood in their music could be needed since this particular formula is very watered down nowadays. Let’s not forget though, and credit them a little for it in the process, Disturbed sure got their own identity, it’s just that it has gotten a bit fucken boring over the years.

Draiman is without a doubt a very good vocalist, I always dug his voice (except for the ridiculous “whu-ah-ah-ah-ah!!!” crap as talked about above) and this music is perfectly suited for his singing escapades. He’s got a good tone and decent enough vocals harmonies (but he’s definitely running out of ideas since he uses pretty much the same harmonies from time to time over all the albums) to work for me. And that’s quite needed since the music of Disturbed ain’t really holding up on its own. It’s music made for the charts, it’s music that will enter the charts. It’s background music. The kind of music that Generation Braindead loves, supports and cherishes. There’s no soul in it, there’s no honesty in it. This could as well be a band that was put together by the idiots who brought us fake acts such as Backstreet Boys, N’Sync and the likes, only this would be the “heavier” version of it. That is not a compliment though Backstreet Boys sure cooked up some decent hits in their prime. I’m sure they wrote them themselves too… At least I believe Disturbed write their own material… For better or for worse.

Anyways, what it comes down to with Disturbed is that if you liked them before you will like them now, coz it sounds exactly the same, only not as “hitty” this time around. There are no immediate hum-along/let’s-put-my-penis-on-fire songs on “Indestructible”, like the previous albums had to some extent (“Inside the fire” comes close though). But it’s not enough to render Disturbed some high scores at GD, that’s for sure. I might as well wrap this up coz there’s only so much I can say about “Indestructible”.

But first, can someone, for the love of Mr. Jesus Penis, please remove those fucken irritating piercings that Mr. Draiman’s got in his fucken face. I don’t care how you do it, just do it!

Oh, and one last thing before I let you go back to your worthless lives. I love the album cover. And I don’t even know why. They have a flaming homo on it. That was actually kinda witty, you know… I mean, the dude’s on fire and shit, and since he’s on a Disturbed cover he must be a homo. So, a flaming homo. Get it? Get it? GET IT?!

Fuck you.

4 “You know for a fact that there’s no justice in this world when a band like Disturbed tops the goddamn Billboard chart over and over again” out of 10.
