Decapitated: Nihility

09/03/02  ||  Lord K Philipson

The Polish youngsters are back, showing the veterans of death metal how it is supposed to sound in the year 2002. A few years back I bought the “Winds Of Creation” album and was completely blown away. These fuckers have everything that a good death metal band should have. The blast beats, the chunky riffs, an okay growler (well, he’s no Jörgen Sandström, but then again, who is?), musicianship that is pretty top-notch, and a fucken good production. Whereas I was a little disturbed by the drummers’ hi-hat technique on the first album (then again, he was like 6 years old or something back at that time), he definitely sorted himself on this one.

I can fully understand the huge amount of press coverage and awards these kids have gotten throughout tons of magazine over the years. Sure, they are young, but it sounds like they were all born with death metal albums up their asses. And delivering the goods this way gets top-points in my book of death metal, if I ever had one.

What’s up with Poland really? They give us the sheer brutality of Vader and before even recovering from that, they spit out Decapitated to please us with. Hey, I’m not complaining though, I’ll take Decapitated any day over Vader, and keep in mind that I love Vader.

Not that I’m afraid that Poland will be the next big death metal country, ‘cause that spot always belongs to Sweden, but if they continue spewing out bands like this, I guess the Swedish death metal elite should really consider their status. God forbid that happens.

Forget about Morbid Angel, Cryptopsy, Deicide or whatever, this is death metal the way it was meant to sound. (I know I say that about Bolt Thrower as well, but that is a completely different issue and I say whatever I want.) Sure, you can hear influences from both Morbid Angel and Deicide in Decapitated, but that’s only natural as some of those albums probably were some of the records that were up thier asses at birth. I think the ‘Caps (fuck no, not the Washington Capitals) deliver far more interesting music than most death metal bands today, the just mentioned ones included.

If you have a soft spot for death metal the excellent way, I strongly recommend that you buy/download their albums and discover once again that I am totally correct with everything I say. Listen to “Spheres of Madness”, take off your pants, jerk off, and admire these young fucken bastards.

This is the death metal album of 2002 so far. Well…it’s only April, but I find it hard to believe that something coming out will beat this. If I was about to rate this, I’d give it an 8/10, and I am:

8/10
