Corpset: Ruins

25/08/11  ||  Smalley

This debut demo by these Finnish death metallers ain’t bad at all, with some decently catchy, punishing riffage, really good lead work, and thankfully non-Cookie Monster growling (their vocalist kind of reminds me of a cross between Johan Hegg and that Napalm Death guy), but the potential punch is neutered some by an overly-polished production, with a rhythm guitar sound that could’ve used some more grit, and a generic triggers sound for the drums. Also, when the lead guitars go high, it’s a pretty annoying sound, so, yeah.

Corpset does have an interesting sort-of mix of traditional death and melo death-y sections, the latter represented by the sing-song-ier moments and some winding lead guitar lines, along with some doom-ier parts to offset the faster, thrash-y stuff, so their songwriting is diverse enough, and is basically fine, but if they want to release this as an official debut album (as Metallum claims), they need to change the production up first if they wish for “Ruins” to reach its full potential. And that’s all you need to know for now.

6.5/10: They could also do with ripping off less song titles from other bands.
