Coma: Excess

02/11/10  ||  Habakuk

Uh-huh. This is a big band in Poland, I suppose? Help me out here, dear Poles.
Their website says they have opened for Linkin Park, Pearl Jam and Tool. They have something going with a Symphonic Orchestra for some other album as well, it seems. Not bad, when they actually sound like a heavier version of… Nickelback. Their genre: “Phenomenal Rock”. Why they are here on Global Domination? Help me out here, Mystic Productions, for I do not know.

Now luckily, I’m not completely dismissive towards rock music. Let’s see if we can find any redeeming factors, shall we – Interesting hooks? Nope. Do the guys know how to play their instruments? Yes, they can, gotta hand it to them. As such, they are in the fine league of almost all other serious bands. They have a pretty good production, I give ‘em that, too, although the drums sound overdone and clicky. The bass sounds good especially. Now, good songwriting? Couldn’t find it. But hey, at least the songs are long! Which is no surprise, considering the plodding speed at which the band present them to the listener. There are a few decent parts (“Silence and fire”), but there is definitely no need to stretch those out to 9 minutes. Learn to fucken cut it.

And yeah, It’s not especially catchy most of the time either, what do you expect. I think I found myself in the middle of random other stuff around 10 times during my short exposure to “Excess” without having noticed the change itself. It appears that Coma automatically put my brain to standby until the automatic recovery routine is in full effect and Morbid Angel end my unwanted slumber. No really, conscience had nothing to do with it. I guess it’s triggered by the vocals with this stupid, Deftones-like, strained “MYFFFUCKENTTEETHAREGLUEDTOGETHHHERRR” sound – when not wandering into Nickelback territory, of course. Let me loosely apply a German saying here: A choice between Pest and Cholera. And never, I repeat never sing words like “day” “day-ay-ay-ay-yeah”, just because they’re at the end of a line.

Coma’s definition of heavy? Open guitar riffs with splash cymbals instead of the hi-hat, or alternatively: chug chu-chug chug riffing with “I am strong enough now!!!” shouts, when they at rare occasions decide to leave their comatose (ha) state of semi-melodic, sluggish whining. Seriously, no. Leave me alone.

The hard thing about this is, it isn’t complete shit music done by a bunch of retards, it’s just a style gone completely awry, and it hasn’t even begun to sound interesting in the process. I mean, just look who’s in the namedrop line further up. I can’t for the life of me see myself enjoying this, or listen to it again, for that matter. Sorry guys, your international career doesn’t exactly kickstart on GD.

Oh yeah, before you go, look at the cover once more so it was worth the click.
