Begrafven: Begrafven

From the first millisecond after hitting play it feels like Mike Tyson just landed a right hook on my chin. The state of mind is that of when everything around you freezes and you just absorb one thing which in this case is black metal magic in its purest form. It is timeless with no modern touch as all.
Begrafven is a new band hailing from Sweden and this is their first demo which was released in august this year. The music is what I would call a textbook example of Nordic black metal, even though the first track Universums grav (the Universe’s grave) reminds me a lot of old Drudkh which is a huge fucking complement. The vocals are well balanced harsh, cold, unbrushed and are placed well in the mix. The bass lines are superb and exactly how I want them by taking off from the guitars and adding a second melody here and there. The tremolo guitar lines are killers and the drummer is pounding there somewhere in the background utilizing the cymbals nicely and by that not stealing the show, nor being irrelevant.
The second and final track, Frälsaren (The Saviour), is slightly different compared to the first and lacks the Drudkh references but adds minor of some heavy metal references. Otherwise both tracks are pure second wave black metal worship and I still stand amazed of how they manage to get what now must be seen as a rather lost atmosphere. I think of bands like Taake, Sorhin (later), Mayhem, Arckanum, Gorgoroth and previously mentioned Drudkh, and that my “friend” is an insanely fucking solid list.
The demo is available for free at their website so go and get it (there are also physical copies) and prepare, autumn is coming! I just fucking hope they don’t change the concept and production at all when making their full length album. Begrafven, my ladies, is not doing something new, and there are no fucking reasons for them to do so either!
