Abacinate: Genesis
08/03/11 || revenant
Ingredients (serves 10 tracks)
1 & 1/2 cups (225g) technical death metal
1 cup (160g) brutality
1 cup (160g) hardcore
2 tsp melodic leads
1/2 cup (75g) groove
10 pieces of non-standard song structures
1/3 cup (60g) low death growled
1/3 cup (125ml) high pitch growled
1/2 cup (125ml) hardcore vocals
1 tsp poser rap vocals
150g sound grabs from television shows and movies, chopped
2 ears
Method
Combine technical death metal, brutality, hardcore and groove ingredients into a bowl and mix well. Divide mixture into 10 separate pieces and form them into parcels, ensuring that each parcel has a random mix of all ingredients. Add non standard song structures to all parcels.
Mix vocals in separate bowl, sift and add to parcels 1 to 7, and 10. For parcels 8 and 9, no vocal ingredients are required, but instead add melodic leads. Add poser rap vocals to parcel 3 (“Abacinate motherfucking 2010, bitch” should be enough, but add more if deemed appropriate). Add sound grabs where appropriate. Seal parcels.
Preheat expectations to 160°C with blistering opening track. Apply heat to parcels and sear ears for 42 minutes . Pour onto CD and serve.

Despite a promising mixture of ingredients, this recipe didn’t come out as expected. Technicality and brutality are just about right, but for mine there is too much hardcore. The rap vocals only serve to make the third parcel sour, and should not be used. The person who did come up with this recipe, however, deserves credit for their skill. Readers with a taste for hardcore and technical death metal should be pleased, and I expect this recipe to find a few fans. Oh, I also recommend getting baked before starting this recipe.

Did that review make any sense? If not, here it is again in summary: Abacinate’s “Genesis” is skilfully performed technical death metal album that delivers non-traditional song structures and precise shifts and changes. The only downside is the hardcore infusion into the music, which was not to my liking.
